Frequently Ask Questions

The Vikings.. men and women.. had tremendous strength , power and endurance. Lifting heavy objects and feats of strength were a regular part of their training, going into battle wearing chainmail and carrying weapons required great muscular endurance. and rowing across the  North Sea really needs no explanation! At Viking Functional Fitness we wish to embody the noble virtues of camaraderie that is built up under duress and build a strong work ethic. The body and mind become stronger when they fight through difficult circumstances.. making you a better person!

I have been interested in working in Health and Fitness before such an industry existed! I crashed and failed badly when trying to join the RAF as a PTI in my late teens but first ran a gym in the late eighties whilst I was a top-level triathlete. In that era, I learnt a lot about programming and conditioning before qualifications really existed!

I also have over twenty years experience in education around the globe, both sporting and academic. I have taught Swimming in the USA and whilst teaching English in Chile I led the Strength and Conditioning sessions for the Rugby and Athletics teams. As a highly qualified coach and teacher I understand the didactics and cognitive process involved in learning far beyond any available fitness qualification available!

With CrossFit East Lothian then CrossFit Edinburgh and now Viking Training System I endeavour to create an environment where everyone... not just those who are physically gifted.. can progress and feel comfortable. A safe community led gym with no pretence or fluff to detract from the essentials!

                                            At 50 plus I still practice what I preach!
