Rachoni is the inland village from the coastal resort of Scala Rachoni with its beaches, harbour, hotels and tavernas. The village is approximately 3 km inland and is famous for its beautiful Greek orthodox church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There is a typical mix of old and new houses and centres around the village square which hosts its memorial to the villagers who lost their lives in WWII.
Around the square is a small cafe, a typical “Men’s Bar” and a few yards away the village shop well stocked with all the essentials. there is also Katerina’s Taverna, a Family run restaurant popular with returning visitors to the island. Alongside the church is “The Drossia” a large mainly open air Taverna which hosts music and dancing in the busy month of August and also benefits from being open all year round.
Nearby is the village of Agious Georgios with its own church, village store and “Christos’ Taverna”. Both villages have been “adopted” by Ex Pats, some full time and some with just summer/holiday properties. All have been welcomed by the local community particularly when they’ve learnt and use a few phrases of Greek to converse with their neighbors. In summer months village life is generally a quiet relaxing affair as many of the young people head of to work in the bars and restaurants of the island open for the summer months although several festivals and music events are held at both the church and in the village square throughout the year.
