Day 5

Theresa was in the office when I arrived at 9. She was with a young man called Andy who was doing his phd at the university and volunteered with the NCLA alongside his research. Theresa left the office and I had a good chat with Andy, he was asking me all about my studies, my dissertation and how it was all going. He was quiet and reserved but made a big effort to get to know me.

Whilst Theresa was out of the office I did some work on the social media to keep myself busy until she came back. Andy and Theresa were in the office all day sifting through hundreds of poems for their competition. They had to narrow the poems down to 100 at most to send to the judge and so they had their work cut out for them for the majority of the day.

When Theresa came back she set me the task of uploading a selected poem for every festival participant onto the website. This took me a while as I had to make sure that every poem was copied across in its exact layout, as often the layout of the poem is important to the poem itself. With the software used for the website, namely Wordpress, the layout often changed in the process of copying it across and I had to figure out how to change it back on the new software. Whilst I was doing this Theresa was chatting away to me about my upcoming skiing holiday. She's Canadian and lives near Whistler Resort so skiing is a pastime of hers. She was really interested in where I was going and what the skiing was like in Europe.

After I finished this task I popped out of the office to get some lunch and I came back in half an hour later. Andy was on his own whilst Theresa was in a meeting with Linda, and he was still working through the competition entries.

I continued working through the social media, advertising the festival and its participants on twitter, facebook, and instagram. I also advertised the upcoming event with Caroline Creido Perez, author of Invisible Women, a book on sexism in data collection. Following that I scrolled through their twitter and liked/retweeted anything that was relevant or interesting. When Theresa came back she said that I could head out for the day.
